Gardenia is a genus of about 142 known flowering species. A little known fact of the Gardenia genus is that it is part of the coffee family, Rubiaceae. The evergreen shrubs and small trees have leaves that are opposite or in whorls of three or four. The leaves are known to be broad, dark green, and glossy with a leathery texture. The flowers which are strongly scented grow solitary or in clusters.
